Spearmint is a wonderful child safe oil from the same family as peppermint. Spearmint Oil was traditionally used to scent bath water. Spearmint plant is believed to have originated from the Mediterranean region, it was widely used in Greece. Spearmint Essential Oil is obtained from the bright green Mentha Spicata herb, and its name is derived from the fact that it has pointed, spear-shaped leaves.
Spearmint Essential Oil is obtained from the steam distillation of the Spearmint plant’s leaves, stems and flowering tops. The extracted essential oils range in color from clear and colorless to a pale yellow or pale olive. Its scent is fresh and herbaceous.

Uses of Spearmint Essential Oil
- General Cleaning Solution – Spearmint Oil can be combined with baking soda, liquid dish soap and warm water to create a natural and effective home cleaning paste. Allow the paste to sit on the surface for a few minutes, scrub with a sponge then rinse off with water. To repel ants and flies, spray spearmint diluted in water around the house, especially around windows and doors. Spearmint Oil can be combined with vinegar and water for a floor cleaning solution that is safe for wood, concrete or tiles.
- Mouthwash – Spearmint is the main ingredient in toothpastes and mouthwashes. Menthol, the volatile compound responsible for the coolness of spearmint essential oil. It freshens the breath while disinfecting the mouth. Spearmint essential oil can be added to your toothpaste or gargled. Add 3 Drops of Spearmint oil to 2 Teaspoons of Coconut oil can be an effective alternative to alcohol-based mouthwash.
- Aromatherapy – Spearmint essential oil has a cool, minty aroma and has been widely used in aromatherapy to provide a calming and soothing effect.
